The Palm Springs, California, hometown of writers, and film and television producers Terence Winter and Rachel Winter, has been put on the market for $2.45 million.
Designed by Hugh Kaptur, a prominent architect in California’s Coachella Valley, the 2,642-square-foot, one-story home dates from 1962. The mid-century modern design presents a Curved stone facade and wrought iron gate. according to the list are Denise Snanoudj and Loran Arvizu from the Agency.
“When you enter this property, you are not just entering a home, you are immersing yourself in a living piece of history,” said Snanoudj, noting “the unique architectural elements and Deep connection to Hollywood’s past and present.”
According to property records, the Winters family bought the property as a second home last summer for $2.265 million.
“Growing up in Los Angeles, I never dreamed of having my own home in Palm Springs,” Rachel said in an email. “Terry grew up in Brooklyn and didn’t even know about Palm Springs until his first visit when he was in his 30s. Over the years, we have visited Palm Springs as a family or a couple and that place became my happy place.
Nicknamed Via Lazo, the mansion was originally owned by Jack Quigley, general manager of Indian Canyons Golf Resort in Palm Springs. According to listing agents, he has close ties to figures such as Ronald Reagan and Bob Hope. Quigley also helped organize the 1968 Governor’s Ball with Richard Nixon, which took place in the front yard of the property, on the 7th hole of the golf course.
The property is located in the Indian Canyons area, which “has it all,” according to Rachel, whose production credits include “Dallas Buyers Club” (2013) and “The Space Between” (2021).
Terence Winter, 63, is known as a producer on “The Sopranos” and “Boardwalk Empire” and as a screenwriter for the 2013 film “The Wolf of Wall Street.”
“The iconic golf course at the base of the mountain, the consistency of the authentic architecture, and the proximity to downtown Palm Springs ticked all the boxes,” says Rachel. “We love walking to Elmers or the Ace Hotel for brunch, drinks, or both. The restaurants and bars are always lively and we didn’t feel uncomfortable being so close to the Casino, right in the heart of the city.
The main house has a family room with a fireplace and views of the San Jacinto Mountains; a chef’s kitchen with custom walnut cabinetry and four bedrooms, including a master suite with views of the grounds and mountains, the listing states. There is another bedroom in the detached casita.
Outside, there’s a private three-hole putting green, kidney-shaped pool, hоt tub, outdoor kitchen shaded pergola, and fire pit.
“As an entertaining family, a literal and figurative shift in perspective has become a necessity and a blessing,” says Rachel. “When I was in the Via Lazo garden, on a deck chair, looking at the clear blue sky, the puffy white clouds, the tall palm trees, and the surrounding mountains, it looked crаzy but I felt at peace, grateful. and have fun.”
