Charles de Gaulle or Charles André Joseph Marie de Gaulle (November 22, 1890 – November 9, 1970) was a famous French politician. He was originally a soldier in the French Army.
Nestled in the town of Beaulieu-Sur-Mer on the French Riviera, between Nice and Monaco, the historic nine-bedroom house was home to de Gaulle, a military officer, prime minister, and president of France, in 1945, according to the listing agent. Andrea Wohl Lucas of Douglas Elliman, who put the property on the market in September.
“He even wrote a speech supporting the liberation of Nice here,” she said.
During World Wr II, de Gaulle led the Free French Forces against Nаzi Germany and presided over the provisional government of the French Republic from 1944 to 1946 to restore democracy to France. He was appointed Prime Minister in 1958 and President in 1959. He died in November 1970, aged 79. In addition to its notable history and former residents, the house is unusually large compared to its neighbors and offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the Mediterranean Sea.
“Most homes in this neighborhood are between 4,000 and 5,000 square feet and have four or five bedrooms. This house is over 10,000 square feet with nine bedrooms and additional rooms for staff,” Wohl Lucas said.
Today, nothing remаins of De Gaulle’s mandate, the estate has been completely renovated.
The owner, whom Mansion Global could not identify, “first undertook a full renovation in 2011 and then renovated again in 2018,” Wohl Lucas said. “The house needs everything.”
She added that the work was carried out in accordance with the requirements of protected monuments. Like many other countries, France has specific regulations regarding the construction and renovation of historical buildings.
Today, the three-story estate spans 11,000 square feet of “absolutely modern” space, according to the listing. There are spacious living areas, two modern kitchens, a formal dining room, multiple terraces, and an elevator.
Meanwhile, the master bedroom “offers spectacular ocean and mountain views,” says Wohl Lucas. “It is 900 square feet and has two walk-in closets and a large bathroom.”
Outside, the swimming pool is surrounded by over an acre of lush gardens and is adjacent to the main house which has caretaker accommodation and several studios for guests or in-house staff.
