When WWE legend Dwayne Johnson was young, he visited arenas to watch his father wrestle. By the time he entered into the wrestling business, his father Rocky Johnson had already hung up his boots. But despite that, the father-son duo got to relish an in-ring moment once in their lifetime.
The Rock’s father was the one who taught him how to wrestle. So sharing a ring with his mentor must have been a really special moment for the wrestler-turned-actor. Scroll down to find out when and where the pair of father and son shared the ring.
Rocky Johnson joined Dwayne Johnson in the ring at WrestleMania 13
Johnson has wrestled at many WrestleManias but surely WrestleMania 13 (which took place in Chicago) must be his favorite moment since he got to wrestle alongside his beloved father. At Mania 13, the second bout of the night took place between The Rock (Rocky Maivia at the time) and The Sultan (also commonly known as Rikishi).
The bout was for the WWF Intercontinental Championship, which Maivia possessed. The champion was successful in retaining his championship but was later attacked by the challenger. Rikishi’s managers, Bob Backlund and The Iron Sheik, also joined the scene and started beating on The Rock.
Luckily, Rocky Johnson came out to help his son from the attackers. They fought off Rikishi and his allies, thus the father-son duo shared an awesome moment in the ring. Though Dwayne Johnson loved his father very much, he didn’t have a normal relationship with him. For most of his life, he misunderstood him.
Johnson had a lot of anger towards his father
Dwayne Johnson didn’t have an easy childhood. From family problems to poverty, he has seen it all. On top of that, Rocky Johnson was always tough on him because of some poor choices he made as a teen. This led to some tensions rising between the father and son over the years.
When Dwayne Johnson told Rocky Johnson that he wanted to join the wrestling business, the latter was against it. He knew the hardships in the wrestling business. Therefore, didn’t want his son to go through all the troubles. But his son was determined enough that he coerced him into accepting his life choices.
Rocky Johnson then took matters into his own hands and trained his son for pro wrestling. Dwayne Johnson, in an interview, revealed that training with his father brought him closer to his father. Though Johnson has pent-up anger towards his father. He had even more respect for him.
