Kanye West was still riding high on the triumph of his billiоn-dollar Yeezy sneaker brand just two years ago. One of the two Wyoming estates he acquired was larger than three thоusand acres. In addition to spending $57 million in cash on an oceanfront Malibu residence designed by the renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando, the wealth appeared to be limitless. Furthermore, despite the contentious nature of his divorce from Kim Kardashian, he purchased a home in Hidden Hills, directly across the street from her residence, out of pure impulse.
Both California properties have been sold for a profit, with the Hidden Hills residence being sold at a loss of six figures and the Malibu mansion being offered for $53 million. After deducting closing costs and real estate agent commissions, West stands to lose many milliоns of dollars on the property even in the improbable event of a full-price offer. Furthermore, whether he ever spent the night at the property, which was demolished during his ownership, is unknown.
The current listing, which is managed by Selling Sunset Luminary and Oppenheim Group member Jason Oppenheim, features photographs of the property from several years ago. However, aerial imagery reveals that almost none of the walls and doors remain, and the interior finishes have presumably been disposed of in a landfill. An offer of “several million dollars” is required to make the property habitable, according to Oppenheim, who stated to the Wall Street Journal.
West had intended to redesign and update the 4,000-square-foot structure before Adidas’s alleged separation from the 46-year-old rapper, which was precipitated by his numerous antisemitic remarks and allegedly bankrupt financial situation. Presently, the structure is a mere concrete edifice that is exposed to the elements. Visibly corroded railings and metal trim pieces encircle the residence, indicating that they are probably irreparable.
It will be intriguing to observe the eventual selling price of the oceanfront property, especially considering its proximity to other residences that are almost all valued at a fraction of West’s $53 million asking price. But this residence does have a distinct lineage; it is one of the few residential properties located in the United States that Ando, who has since become a highly coveted architect among the affluent privileged, has ever designed.
West, who continues to be one of the best-selling artists of all time and one of the most successful record producers in the world, is probably not even close to being impoverished. But he appears to be transitioning away from real estate ownership, as he frequently spends months at a time in some of Los Angeles’s most upscale hotels, such as the oceanfront Nobu Ryokan when he is not traversing the world with his “wife” Bianca Censori.
